21 Creative Kindness Stories

It was the fall of 2016 and my husband and I had been trying to sell our home for several months. The 75-year-old riverfront cottage had its fair share of charm and quirkiness with a spiral staircase, cedar trim, and an old oak tree that was within inches of bumping up against our screened-in back porch. Its quirks made it more challenging to sell than we originally had anticipated. We’d already had a contract fall through after spending considerable amounts of money making some major unexpected repairs and my anxiety about our ability to sell and our family finances was at an all-time high.

It was right around this time that we had some dear friends stop by who just had closed on the sale of their home. They both had been compelled to bless us with a generous gift from the profits of their sale and handed us a $10,000 check. Wouldn’t you know that $10,000 was the exact amount of money we would need to finalize some remaining repairs to the home and get us to the closing table? A Creative Kindness like that can change the world. Here’s how.

My husband and I stood there speechless and moved to tears by their sacrificial generosity. It took our breath and our words away and I still haven’t quite found the right ones to convey our gratitude for the depth of their kindness. It changed the trajectory of our life and the way we think about extending kindness to others.

random acts of kindnessMaybe you’re in a season where you can be a source of surprising kindness or maybe you’ve experienced something similar. Kindness is something there can never be too much of. And while any kindness is a breath of fresh air, a Creative Kindness goes beyond the ordinary and touches our hearts in a deeper way. Sometimes that deeper connection happens because of the uniqueness of the gesture itself. At other times, it’s the perfect timing of the Creative Kindness that makes it so meaningful. Take a look at these Creative Kindness stories.

1. My dad traveled halfway around the world to give me his kidney. My mum looked after my house and 9-month-old son while I received my transplant. That was two years ago and I’m now seeing my son grow. I will always be grateful for their unconditional love and the second opportunity I’ve been given at life.

prayer for marriage2. In the year leading up to my marriage, my mom had a different person every day commit to praying for me and my husband. That was AMAZING and really, really, really blew my mind!

3. This morning, I had a friend call and say, “I will be there in 25 minutes. You need some help.” I have had some health issues, family issues, and have been overwhelmed. She showed up with a vacuum cleaner, mop, bucket, and cleaning supplies. I made coffee and we worked for a little over two hours. No one has ever done anything like this for me.

4. My dad cleans my car (inside and out) every time I go home for a visit. It’s his way of showing me that he loves me and cares for me.

5. Someone paid off my hubby’s college loan, paid for our vehicle to be fixed, and offered to pay the down payment when we bought our first house. We pray all the time that this person will be blessed by God as much as they have blessed us. This person said they have been blessed and want to be a blessing to us.

6. When a coworker died unexpectedly, our office staff wrote letters to his young children about how wonderful he was, so that they would know some of the kind and important things their father had done in his life.

7. Sometimes I’ll leave a favorite yummy on my coworker’s desk when I know she’s stressed or I just feel like blessing her.  She always knows where it came from.

8. Our car ran out of gas and we were stranded on the side of the road. My husband is paralyzed from the waist down and he didn’t have his wheelchair.  So there I was with no money and no gas for the car when a stranger came along and paid for our tow, carried my husband to his car, and gave us a ride to the gas station! I will never forget it. I don’t even know his name!

9. Ever since I went away to college, my dad has been a loyal pen pal. He handwrites letters to me at least once a month, updating me on life back home or simply sending words of encouragement—he knows that is my love language. Sometimes, he’ll stick little surprises inside like a penny “for my thoughts” or a leaf from our backyard tree when it changes colors in the fall.

10. A father who had never been away from any of his children on their birthdays did this for his daughter when he finally did have to be out of town on her big day:

11. A dear friend of mine, knowing I was going through a stressful time, paid for an appointment for me with a counselor.

12. Someone neatly folded my laundry that was left unattended in a public laundromat.

13. When we had planned to adopt one child, the opportunity came along to adopt two, but we didn’t have enough money. A woman we know paid the difference of thousands of dollars. She said she herself couldn’t adopt so this was her way of being part of our adoption.

14. A classmate in nursing school took care of a particularly nasty bedpan for me. I just was finishing the third month of my last pregnancy.

15. I’m a single working mom. One of my mom friends offers my son rides to cross country practice. Her son isn’t even in cross country and she lives on the other side of town.

16. A friend came over for a mentor Bible study and then sat and listened to me whine for two hours. I needed an ear so desperately and she gave two hours of listening and good comments.

17. One Christmas season, the tree displaying all of my vintage Christmas ornaments crashed to the ground, breaking most of my collection. After a coworker heard about it, she lovingly presented me with boxes of replacements. I still think of her kindness every year when I place the topper she gave me on the tree.

18. When my mother died, I was attending a new church where I only had been going for a few weeks. On the morning of my mother’s funeral, a carload of the ladies from that church came to my father’s house with platters and bowls of homemade food for my family.

19. A very kind coworker of mine baked her delicious, homemade chocolate cake on my birthday because she knew that no one else was getting me a cake.

20. I often receive letters in the mail from my fiancé’s grandfather, just letting me know he is thinking of me and encouraging me!

21. Just recently, I was pulling into my local grocery store in the middle of a downpour. I barely could see out my windshield to make out two figures in the rain. One of them was a store employee holding an umbrella and the other was a customer. It quickly became apparent that the customer was unable to walk well and the employee was weathering the storm to ensure that this customer and his or her groceries made it to the car as dry as possible. The employee, of course, was sopping wet because of his effort to serve this customer sacrificially. What kind of crazy Creative Kindness is that? It’s the kind of kindness that challenges me to look for opportunities to serve others like that, too.
