7 Things You Don’t Miss About Being Single

My single friends often complain about things like lonely Friday nights. My married friends often complain about how hard it is to be married. The grass is always greener on the other side they say. For those of you who are married, we thought we would remind you why you don’t miss being single so you can remember why you’re thankful to be married.

If you’re married, here are the things you probably don’t miss about being single–they might even make you say, “I love being married!”

1. No one to hug you or show you physical affection.

This can be one of the hardest parts of being single. Touch is such an important part of how we are wired. So don’t forget to appreciate those hugs and kisses from your partner even if they feel familiar.

2. Having to go to weddings, holiday gatherings or other events alone.

No one likes to go to group functions alone. It’s always easier to attend an event with someone you already know.  That way you’re guaranteed not to have any of those awkward moments when you feel like everyone else already has someone to talk to, and you’re standing around not quite sure what to do. Being married carries this built-in advantage: you always have someone to go with you.

3. No one to share the events of your day with.

When you’re single, there’s no one to talk to about what happened at work, or the funny thing that happened to you at the grocery store or about what your boss did today that really frustrated you. In marriage, we have a partner who’s invested (or should be) in our success and happiness. My husband often makes helpful suggestions about how to handle problems that arise.

4. Eating meals alone.

No one likes to eat alone. (Well, maybe introverts don’t mind.)

5. Having to find a friend to spend time with on the weekends.

Human beings are naturally social, so when we’re single, we have to work much harder at meeting our needs for relationship. In marriage, we can be grateful we always have a companion. Let’s appreciate the value of companionship.

6. Being the third wheel.

My single friends sometimes complain that they feel like the third wheel. To them, it feels like everyone is already coupled off. And while they still enjoy time with their married friends, they don’t want to feel like an outsider. For those of you married, you can choose to be thankful for quality time with your partner. And together, you can try to make your single friends feel like they are a genuine part of your community.

7. Carrying your own groceries or suitcases.

I so appreciate that my husband helps me with these things, and he never complains. (He even takes out the garbage on his own initiative. Amazing.)

If you’re looking for even more reminders, here are some other things you can be thankful for.
