January 06, 2009 - Choosing your battles (Post a Comment)
When it comes to your older kids, how do you choose your battles? One mom I know thinks her 20-year-old son is great. On his own, and because of the early guidance of his parents, he has decided: no drugs, no drinking and no pre-marital sex. His mom is thrilled about those choices.
She’s not quite as thrilled with his long hair, multiple piercings, and edgy clothing. But she keeps those choices in perspective and doesn’t nag him. She realizes that he’s a man now and that on the big things – the things that have major consequences – he’s showing wisdom and maturity. And she hopes that in time, the relatively minor things, like his edgy appearance, will resolve themselves.
