PMS: Three types of "PMS husbands"

The Lecturer

  • Thinks he can talk you into handling your symptoms better.
  • Encourages you to work harder at controlling your thinking and emotions.
  • Can be hard on you because he doesn't understand why you might let it all hang out when you're having PMS.
  • Instead of responding to your irritability with gentleness, he attacks.

Your response:

Thank him for his advice and patiently remind him that PMS is a physical condition involving hormones.

Tell him…

1. While you don't want to use PMS as an excuse, it does make you feel emotionally and physically out of sorts.

2. Remind him that you are trying to handle PMS better.

3. Tell him you don't mean to take it out on him personally.

Ask him…

To lower his expectations for you during your PMS times (the house not as neat, meals not as fancy, etc).  Let him know that having less stress will help you better handle PMS.

The Avoider

  • Runs for the hills when you're having PMS.
  • He avoids you and tries to "give you space."

Your response:

If you prefer that he keeps his distance, thank him for taking that action.

Tell him…

1. While you don't want to use PMS as an excuse, it does make you feel emotionally and physically out of sorts.

2. Remind him that you are trying to handle PMS better.

3. You don't mean to take it out on him personally.

Ask him…

If you need more interaction from him during PMS, ask him specifically for what you need: more hugs, more encouragement, etc.

The Saint

  • No husband is that perfect, but there are some men who rally to their wife's side during PMS.
  • They help around the house more, and help with the kids more.
  • They keep a light heart during this time, and don't take the emotional outbursts personally.

Your response:

Thank him!

Tell him…

You'll make it up to him with a great dinner, a guy's night out… whatever he wants!

Ask him…

How you can make his life easier.
