Stress: The HALT Questions
When you feel stressed, when you feel overwhelmed, when you feel you just can't handle everything that's on your plate, check in with yourself and be sure your basic needs are being met. Ask yourself the HALT questions.
| Hungry | Am I hungry? Physically, have I eaten enough today? Have I eaten healthy foods that will energize me, or have I filled up on sweets, caffeine and empty calories? While you're checking your hunger, check your thirst level too. |
| Angry | What's your emotional state? Is there something bothering you that's festering below the surface and it's impacting how you're feeling and acting? Ask yourself why you'refeeling angry and what you can do about it. Also, use this chart to see if PMS is the problem. PMS can make us feel like things are worse than they are. |
| Lonely | Are you feeling lonely, unloved or emotionally drained? How are the primary relationships in your life? |
| Tired | How much sleep did you get last night? How much sleep are you averaging each night? If your body is tired, your mind will be tired also. A tired mind and body are not well-equipped to handle the pressures of the day. |
So, once you've asked yourself the HALT questions, you can acknowledge how deficits in those four areas could be affecting your thinking and behavior.
