Movie Message

The Synopsis:

Arthur Curry learns that he is the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis and must step forward to lead his people and be a hero to the world.

The Review:

The aquatic superhero of Superfriends and the Justice League,Aquaman finally received top billing in a film that guides fans old and new through his journey to becoming King of Atlantis. Played with a blend of brute strength and charm by Jason Momoa, the son of a lighthouse keeper and the queen of Atlantis proves to be both entertaining and inspiring.

When Aquaman’s half-brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) threatens to unite the undersea kingdoms in a war with the surface world, Atlantean Mera (Amber Heard) recruits Aquaman to discover a long-lost trident that will prove Aquaman is the true king. With humor, and a perilous quest to rival Hercules, Aquaman battles Orm, Black Manta, and a host of underwater creatures to save both of his worlds from destruction.

Director James Wan applies the fantastic special effects at his disposal with a solid acting job by Momoa, Wilson, Heard, and a host of other well-known actors like Willem Dafoe, Dolph Lundgren, and Julie Andrews. While the CGI battles rival scenes from Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films, the heart of the film remains in Momoa’s portrayal of Aquaman.

Wrestling with the loss of his mother at a young age and considering the recent battles he experienced alongside the Justice League, Aquaman must come to grips with what it means to lead well. Families will enjoy the action, but there is much to be discussed here, like the choices between revenge or graceful mercy, dictatorship or democracy, hate or love. Like the example of better-known heroes like Superman or Wonder Woman, DC’s delivery of Aquaman proves to be an exemplary reminder of what it means to be a hero.
