Movie Message

"Sometimes the fates of man and shadows are intertwined," the keeper of a great treasure tells a 9-year-old boy. That's the underlying theme of Guardian of the Ancient Shadow Crown, a story where an evil witch named Geldren is intent on capturing a crown needed to give her unlimited power. The story, set in a world of shadows where everybody seems to speak in mysterious whispers, teaches us that evil doesn't remain dormant forever and can only be overcome by one who comes in the flesh. Hence, their fates are intertwined. Somebody with a foot in both worlds must intervene.

Despite the gentle mystic feel of this Irish-made movie, there are unmistakable Christian overtones woven into it. Geldren will steal, kill and destroy anybody who gets in the way of her lust for power, but ultimately it's a child who saves the day. The boy is named Matthew, and while he's a bit of a loner and a daydreamer, he also has the requisite curiosity that guides him to his destiny. The crown is meant for this son, and though his mother doesn't completely understand what's going on in his head, she doesn't try to dissuade him from what's meant to be.

Matthew's curiosity is stirred when he finds a map that his late grandfather drew, a map that leads underground. The old map is more interactive than you might expect; words appear on the page and guide him to the next step. Eventually, they lead him to Yorrick, who introduces him to the world of shadows and points him toward his destiny. There are a few twists we won't give away here, but suffice it to say that the overall message seems to point in a positive direction. While set in mystical surroundings, there's nothing about this movie that endorses dark magic or occult practices. It doesn't quote Scripture either, but the hints at what's transpiring lean toward a positive direction and merit the Dove-Approved Seal for All Ages.

The Dove Take:

Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The shadows know, and they take decisive action to bring goodness to light in this not-quite-as-spooky-as-it-looks fantasy tale.
