Recommended Reading List

Once your children feel confident and comfortable reading on their own, the two of you can read aloud – together.  The following list is suitable for children ages 8 and older.  When the titles might be of particular interest to boys or girls specifically, (G) for girls and (B) for boys follows.  If a title should be reserved for children of a certain age, the recommended age follows in parentheses.

Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl (G) (12) — A young girl goes into hiding from the Nazis in World War II.

Anne of Green Gables – Lucy Maud Montgomery (G) — A girl is adopted by a family who had wanted to adopt a son.  The book follows her growth into a lovely, young woman.

Black Beauty – Anna Sewell — This life story of a horse is touching and captivating.

The Black Cauldron– Lloyd Alexander — Along the lines of Harry Potter.

The Borrowers – Mary Norton — A charming book about little people who live among the big ones.

Charlotte‘s Web – E. B. White — Animal characters bring a story of love and priorities to life.

Dandelion Wine– Ray Bradbury (B) (11) — Good coming-of-age story about a 12-year-old boy.

The Enormous Egg – Oliver Butterworth — Find out what happens when a boy discovers a huge egg.

The Hobbit – J.R. R. Tolkien — A journey through a whimsical, magical land of interesting and endearing characters.

The Hundred Dresses – Eleanor Estes (G) — A poor girl is teased by her classmates after she tells them she has a hundred dresses in her closet.  Her heartache teaches her a lesson in honesty, and others a lesson in kindness.

Island of the Blue Dolphins – Scott O’Dell (G) — A twelve-year-old girl must find ways to survive when she is isolated and alone on a tropical island.

The Little House on the Prairie books – Laura Ingalls Wilder — The books that inspired the television show, Little House on the Prairie. 
Including: Little House in the Big Woods, Little House on the Prairie, Farmer Boy, On the Banks of Plum Creek, By the Shores of Silver Lake, The Long Winter, Little Town on the Prairie, These Happy Golden Years, and The First Four Years.

Little Women – Louisa May Alcott (G) — A touching story of four sisters and their adoring mother.

The Narnia Series – C.S. Lewis — These books are ideal for children who enjoyed Harry Potter.

Red Badge of Courage – Stephen Crane — A boy becomes a soldier in the United States’ Civil War.

Robinson Crusoe – Daniel Defoe — A shipwreck survivor creates an island kingdom.

The Secret Garden  — Frances Hodgson (G) — An orphaned girl goes to live with her uncle.  She discovers a magical world of possibilities and friendship.

Sarah, Plain and Tall  – Patricia MacLachlan — Two children hope a certain, strong women will one day marry their father.

Treasure Island– R.L. Stevenson (12) — A young boy goes on a sea-faring adventure.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea – Jules Verne — A master of science fiction weaves an underwater tale of a crew trapped in a submarine.

Where the Red Fern Grows  — Wilson Rawls (B) A boy’s affection for two dogs helps bring about his coming of age.
