The Dangers of the Mind-Numbing Box

Too much of anything—even if it’s good—is bad.  Nielsen Media Research, Inc. reports that the average American spends about four and a half hours a day watching television. In contrast, the average parent spends only 38 minutes per week in meaningful conversation with their children.

Television in Bedrooms

If there is one place to literally pull the plug on the television and demand there is none, it is in the bedroom. The journal, Pediatrics, has found a shocking link between television in teenagers’ bedrooms and health. Those that have a television are rarely eating fruits and vegetables, enjoying family meals or exercising regularly. They also have higher sweetened beverage consumption and lower grades.

From the Minnesota School of Public Health, nearly 2/3 of those surveyed with a television in their rooms report to watching four to five times more television per week than those who don’t have one in their bedroom. Boys with a T.V. in their room also report to having a lower grade point average than boys who do not.

For adults, it’s not much better. A study at Osaka University in Japan shows that adults who watch television before falling asleep report that they don’t feel like they are getting enough sleep. They are tired and sluggish. However, those who don’t have a television in their rooms report to being more awake and alert, even though they get the same exact amount of sleep.
