I Yelled… Again

If you meet a mom who says she never yells, be wary about that relationship! All moms yell because we’re human and because our kids are human. Knowing you’re not the only one who loses her cool now and then should make you feel better, but is it enough to really help you let go of the shame many moms feel for yelling? In this episode, Megan talks about a time her husband yelled at their 3-year-old. Before you think Megan just threw her husband under the bus, she admits she yells at her son for much less egregious offenses.

Who yells more in your house, you or your husband? Years ago, lots of people had the image of the stern father who raises his voice while the mom stands in the background ready to jump in and soothe her upset child. But now, more moms are fessing up to yelling, and dads seem to be more relaxed. Women carry so much more today, so it’s no wonder we yell more. But is the yelling about your child or you? We all admitted that the times we’ve raised our voices, we’ve been at the end of our ropes.

You’re setting yourself up for failure if you say you’ll never yell again, but there are things you can do to yell less or have more self-control. We talked about how to respond when you’re triggered. It’s four simple steps, but it takes intention and practice. If you are quick to yell, remember, you’re not damaging your child. Just work to have more positive connections than negative ones. We have some great ideas for that, too!
