It’s safe to say every parent has been lied to, but dealing with a child who lies isn’t simple. What do you do when you have a child who lies frequently or you just don’t understand why he or she is choosing to withhold the truth? This week’s story comes from Abby but is about her boss. Don’t worry—he gave her permission to share it. It’s about a time he lied by omission and let his sister’s dog take the blame for something he did. The family’s carpet and his relationship with the dog were never the same again!

Lying is a big deal because trust is important within a family. The way we respond to our kids’ dishonesty can lead to more lies in the future and it can make the immediate situation more complicated. So the iMOM Podcast team talks about what not to say when a child lies. You might be surprised to hear that the list includes things you probably say every time you suspect your child of lying.

Are all lies the same? Maybe you don’t tolerate lies of any kind, but listen to the episode for the six kinds of lies kids tell, and you’ll learn there are different motivations behind the kinds of lies. Lying is often the manifestation of some other kind of insecurity or fear. A lie might be the thing that opens your eyes to a bigger issue your child is dealing with like pressure at school or feeling neglected by Dad. While a consequence is called for, don’t miss out on the chance to go deeper with your child and help him with whatever he’s going through.
