Do you feel like a burned out mom? We hear it all the time. Maybe not “burned out” but exhausted, overwhelmed, tired, depleted… They all point to the same truth. Today’s moms are doing too much. We want to be all things to our husbands, our kids, and our jobs. A survey conducted by The Ohio State University found that 66% of working parents reported feeling “burned out.” The study says, “Burnout in parents is the physical, emotional over-exhaustion and that feeling of just, ‘I need a break.'”

And in 2019, the World Health Organization recognized burnout syndrome in its International Classification of Diseases. It says burnout is an “occupational phenomenon” rather than a medical condition. Maybe you’ve always heard burnout coupled with someone’s job, like “I was a teacher for 30 years and got burned out.” Or maybe you’ve heard it related to a kid playing a sport for a long time and wanting to hang it up. “He played baseball for 10 years but got burned out.” This “disease” as classified by the WHO that’s always been associated with a job or hobby is now associated with parenting, but burned out moms can’t quit parenting. Our kids need us, and they deserve moms who have energy and joy. So what do we do?

You start by asking if you’re buying into some of the things that our culture says you have to do in order to be a good mom. Or maybe you’re telling yourself one of these things and holding yourself to unfair standards. In this episode’s discussion, we not only tackle the five lies burned out moms believe, but we also ask what we can do to put out the fire that’s causing the burn.
