My Husband Has a Life, and I Don’t

Megan has baby number two on the way! She knows her future includes a lot of diapers and overnight feedings, but she’s frustrated that her husband actually still has a life outside of their newborn. She knows this is just a season, but as an extrovert who loves time outside of her home, she’s wrestling with feelings of jealousy. Before you raise a fist saying her husband needs to step up, you should know he is a very hands-on dad. But the nature of being a mom to a newborn means there’s more of a need for her presence.

What about after the newborn stage? Being a dad today isn’t like it was years ago. Fathers are more involved than ever before. In fact, our fatherhood program, All Pro Dad, is present in over 1000 schools across the United States. At All Pro Dad chapter meetings, dads and kids gather before school to connect and engage in meaningful conversations. If you want to find out more or start a chapter at your child’s school, here’s some information.

But in most families, there’s still more of a dependency on Mom. It’s a privilege, but also can feel like a burden at times. For many moms, free time is spent running errands while dad’s free time is spent on hobbies. And being able to get away with friends often takes a spreadsheet, a family meeting, and an act of Congress. Do we put this burden on ourselves by being too controlling and not involving our husbands in more of the everyday decisions and responsibilities?

If your husband has a life and you don’t, what can you do to make a change? How can you take back some time for yourself and hand the reins over with confidence?
