Parenting Different Personalities

Families are made up of a bunch of different personalities. Mom and Dad start it off, and then, one kid after the next, you learn that no two people are built the same. On one hand, this is what makes a family beautiful. On the other, it’s what gives a mom a headache. Parenting different personalities requires observing your children, celebrating their differences, and adjusting your approach to meet individual needs.

In this episode, Abby, Susan, Megan, and Chloe talk about some of the most common differences between siblings. Susan and Abby both have one introverted child and one extroverted one, and Susan’s two oldest are vastly different on the emotional scale. Maybe you have one easygoing child and another who’s so stubborn you often face off.

Parents often say, “This child is just like me,” or, “She’s more like her dad.” Do you think it’s easier to parent a child who’s like you or different from you? The group agrees it’s usually easier to parent the one that’s like you, at least until that child starts showing some of your less attractive qualities!

Susan takes a moment in this episode to share part of her story about adopting two children from Russia and how their difficult childhoods required her to adjust her parenting. If you’re considering fostering or adopting, this episode will help you gain insight and hopefully confidence that you’re the right mom for the job!

Parenting is sanctifying. It refines us because as we’re raising and forming our children, we’re also being shaped. Hopefully that helps you embrace the challenges that come with parenting different personalities.
