Are You Losing Yourself or Finding Yourself in Motherhood?

Have you seen the Airbnb ad that shows two women on vacation but not fully enjoying themselves until the kids in the picture disappear? That was the spark that started our conversation in this episode about finding or losing your identity in your motherhood journey. Megan and Susan both had the same observation about the ad. They both felt like it was telling moms their kids are holding them back from enjoying life. If moms are feeling like they’re losing themselves in motherhood, Airbnb is responding by saying, “Get a little bit of yourself back without your kids during a stay at one of our homes.”

We dig into a survey from Motherly about Gen Z moms that found they are less than half as likely to plan on having another child than millennial moms were a few years ago. But, they also report having more support from their partners, working out more frequently, going out with friends more often, and going on date night more frequently than their older counterparts. So what gives? Does that align with your motherhood experience?

Chloe, Abby, Megan, and Susan talk about self-care and how women feel like they’re losing themselves because they don’t have time to take care of themselves. Of course we need to care for our health and well-being, but as a culture, are we becoming obsessed with self-care? And they also ask the big question: Aren’t you supposed to lose a little bit of yourself through the sacrifices of your motherhood journey? Isn’t that the point? Could losing the “self” you always envisioned actually make room for a better you than you could’ve hoped for?
