Moms and Sons: How Mothers Influence Their Boys

Did you think having a boy meant your husband would have a forever pal and you’d always be the third wheel? If you did, we bet life looks different than you pictured. Many moms say the mother and son relationship is one of the sweetest, most loving relationships in their lives. Moms and daughters can become best friends, but moms and sons are forever tied at their heartstrings.

While your husband might teach your son how to change the oil in the car or how to tie a tie, your mother and son relationship is important too, and that’s what we’re discussing in this episode of the iMOM Podcast. Chloe, Megan, Abby, and Susan all have boys, but they’re at different stages of teaching their boys how to be kind, strong, and courteous. Their chat flows from discussing how to raise boys in a world with a complicated definition of masculinity to whether or not a boy should open a door for a girl. (For the record, we think he should. It’s just tough for a young man to navigate chivalry and respect today.)

Because we’re looking out for sons’ future wives, too, our conversation also touches on how to be close to our boys but not coddle them or grow an unhealthy attachment. As much as we love that our boys love us, we want them eventually to let go of us and make their wives their number ones. The best news is that helping your son grow into a young man is probably something you’re doing every day without even trying. In case you doubt us, we’ll give you some examples of little things that make a big impact.
