Parenting Well When Tragedy Strikes

It’s the part of being a mom that none of us wants to face: talking to kids about tragedy. It’s heartbreaking to witness their innocence taken away when they hear about evil in the world or another disaster that takes people’s homes or family members. We’re in the middle of processing pain, shock, or confusion, and we have to shift to parenting mode and have the right words. So what are they? How do you parent well during tragic events? In this episode, we address personal tragedy, like the loss of a grandparent, and widespread tragedy, like a school shooting, natural disaster, or war.

For children of all ages, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends asking your kids what they’ve heard, if anything. They also need to know they can come to you with questions. And don’t be afraid to admit you don’t have all the answers. What if your child hears news you weren’t ready for them to know? Many of us try to protect our kids from bad news, but sometimes classmates, teachers, and other parents have other plans. In those cases, we have to be ready with a response, especially if they ask why bad things happen or if they’re in danger.

Tragic events are hard to process with kids, but they are also an opportunity to teach kids about kindness, generosity, faith, and hope. Don’t miss out on a chance to grow closer to your family through prayer, conversation, and physical comfort.
