Raising Confident Daughters

“And that’s why I’m going to be on the cover of Architecture Magazine!” In today’s episode, Abby tells the story of her niece giving a speech at her fifth-grade awards ceremony, where she boldly proclaimed that she had a bright future ahead of her. She’s a tough little girl, and it got Abby wondering what her sister is doing to raise a child with such guts and strength. Raising confident daughters isn’t easy, but a confident girl can change the world, so the effort is worth it!

What does a confident girl look like to you? Some girls are quiet yet confident in a way that looks different from the child who’s willing to stand in front of a room filled with classmates and parents and proclaim her life goals. Some girls are confident in a way that helps them stand up for others or pursue things they enjoy.

For teenage girls, there’s a misconception that overtly sexy must be self-confidence, and some girls think that being strong means you have to push boys away. So how do you help your daughter grow in strength, character, and confidence without suggesting she look at boys as the enemy?

In this episode, we give you some questions you can ask your daughters to help them exercise their confidence muscles. Try simple questions like these: What do you think? How do you feel about____? What’s important to you right now? When girls know their voices matter, they’ll be more likely to use them.
