Making the Most of a School Break

Have you ever reached the end of a school break and heard, “We didn’t do anything!” The kids don’t think they had enough fun or went anywhere special. Meanwhile, you’re thinking, You’re right, we didn’t get those drawers cleaned out, we didn’t visit your grandparents, and we didn’t stay on any schedule, so getting up for school on Monday will be a bear.

In this episode of the iMOM Podcast, we talk about how to make the most of a school break, whether it’s a week, like spring break, or a couple of months, like summer vacation.

The first step is to decide what a good break looks like for you from a mom’s perspective. What’s a top priority? Chances are, your top priority won’t line up with each of your kids’, so how do you have some give and take? And what about when your kids are in high school and want to hang out with friends?

If you want your kids to do something other than sleep and stare at screens over the summer, how long do you wait until you require them to do stuff, like read, practice math facts, and do chores? Susan gave her kids a week!

And if you’re a working mom, we didn’t forget about you. We all have to manage the kids over the summer while working. We have some encouragement for you if you feel like your kids’ school breaks fall short because you can’t take the whole time off.

We also share our favorite memories from school breaks, and our answers sum up what matters most: family time together and tradition. So don’t stress too much about what your kids do. Who they do it with is so much more important!
