When a child doesn’t like a teacher, it makes for a long school year. In today’s episode, Megan tells a story about a teacher whose personality definitely did not mesh with hers. To make matters worse, she had this teacher three years in a row.

Do you remember having a teacher you didn’t like? Teaching is a difficult job, and all teachers have students who make the year difficult. We bet they have a list of kids they’re not sad to see move on to the next grade. But when a child comes home from school after having a serious conflict with a teacher, it’s hard for a parent to know what to do. Do you ask for a conference? Do you go to administration if the situation calls for it? Or, do you tell your child this is just the beginning of having to work with people who are hard to get along with? There’s also the possibility your child is unfairly judging the teacher and you have an opportunity to teach him how to practice empathy.

The podcast team also chats about why it’s often the math teacher who kids don’t like. Could there be a connection between anxiety around the subject and the way your child feels about the teacher? This is another example of why it’s important to observe your child and ponder what might be the underlying issue. Your child just might not want to go to school and the teacher is the easiest person to blame. We talk about all these things along with ideas to help manage a child’s frustrations when he has to face the teacher every day and how to make the tough decision to remove your child from a school.
