How to Slow Down and Be Present With Your Kids

Have you ever looked at your kids and thought, “They’re growing up so fast.” I think every mother has. If we don’t slow down and practice being present with our kids, it’s easy to feel like time is slipping away. In this episode of the iMOM Podcast, we talk about how to take little moments to pause and engage with our kids. It won’t stop time from passing by or keep them young forever, but it will build connections that will stay with us and them always.

We start the episode with a story from Abby about her mom noticing her son’s tiny wet footprint on the sidewalk. Abby admitted she was focused on packing up the blanket, papers, and markers her son was playing with. She was grateful her mom drew her attention to the little foot and the five dots made by his toes. That day has stuck with her for more than 10 years, but she said she still finds it difficult to balance being present and managing everything that needs to be done in a day.

Susan, Megan, and Chloe chime in with thoughts on where our minds go when we’re trying to set everything else aside and why we feel the need to keep moving and be productive. Then we chat about things moms do that might feel unproductive or even like a waste of time but are actually communicating powerful messages to our children.

Parenting requires making small deposits of time, attention, and care day after day. It’s an investment, and most investments grow slowly. Often, you can’t see the growth, but it’s happening! How do you slow down and practice being present with your kids? Is it easy for you to turn everything else off or tune out the noise? What are signs that you’re actually slowing down and noticing your child?
