How Scary Is Too Scary?

Was scary allowed in your house as a kid? What was the first scary show or movie you were allowed to watch? Maybe kids watching scary shows was out of the question in your house, and you snuck it in secret. In today’s episode, Abby tells Susan, Megan, and Chloe about her son’s request to watch Stranger Things and his claim that everyone at school is allowed to watch it and Squid Game (Abby didn’t buy that line). Today’s chat starts with the podcast team sharing their experience with Halloween costumes and trick-or-treating growing up. Heads-up, one was made to dress like a woman from the Bible while another went as one of the three blind mice.

There’s a lot to consider when you’re deciding what to let your kids watch. One question to ask yourself is “Am I letting my child grow up too quickly?” You might have a favorite movie from when you were young that isn’t too scary for a 16-year-old, but you don’t want to wait until then, so you allow your child to watch it at age 12.

Or your child might be wearing you down, asking over and over again for permission to watch something. Kids are always going to push boundaries, so why do we give in to this more than to other things? If your 11-year-old begged to drink a beer with you at dinner, you’d say no, knowing it’s not safe. Yet programs that promote evil, violence, or darkness we let slide. When we’re tempted to give in to a child who’s begging to watch something scary, we have to stand firm. There’s so much bad in the world. Why not try to preserve their innocence for as long as possible and say no to that show?
