Have your kids asked to use A.I. for school, or have you caught them using it and heard, “It’s fine, Mom. I swear.” Whether it’s ChatGPT, Bard, or just Grammarly, A.I. is at our kids’ fingertips, so parents need to learn about it and be prepared to talk to their kids about using it.

If you’re in the dark about using A.I. in school, we’ll help you understand the difference between ChatGPT and Bard and explain how kids are utilizing them. We also talk about the reliability of these programs and how you can guide your kids. For example, some teachers allow their students to use A.I. to research a topic but then require students to back up their claims using their own knowledge and research.

We also dig deeper into the moral implications of using A.I. in school. Is it cheating? Is it plagiarism? And what about the effects of using A.I. on our kids’ abilities to think critically, process information, and formulate thoughts? In a survey by Junior Achievement, students were asked their reason for using A.I. for schoolwork, and 22% said they believe it eliminates the need to acquire knowledge. That’s scary and disheartening. It’s one thing to use technology for a boost; it’s another to use it as a shortcut to avoid learning. That same survey showed that 60% of kids think using A.I. is cheating.

But this technology isn’t going anywhere, so we talk about how parents can walk their kids through this change and embrace A.I. healthily and productively. The debate over A.I. is also a chance to have deeper conversations with them about important character traits like integrity, diligence, and self-discipline.
