It’s Goal Time

Many people set goals at the start of a new year, but for long-term growth, goal-setting should be done all throughout the year. And it’s never too early to start setting goals with your kids. Chloe’s story today is a sweet reminder of the impact parents can have on their children’s mindsets. She shares the annual practice her dad did with her to look ahead through the school year and write goals. He also had her write 10-year goals back when she was 17. When she found the list recently, she realized all of her goals had been met. His wise approach was to have her write them in the context of “things I’ll be grateful for in 10 years.”

A hard realization for goal-oriented Chloe is that not everyone loves setting goals as much as she does. Exhibit A is her husband. But she’s also wondering how parents set appropriate goals for kids and how to help kids who aren’t goal-oriented. If you’re playing the long game (which we always should be in parenting), you want to set your kids’ goals so they help instill good character traits, like patience, optimism, diligence, and perseverance.

What about goals for moms? We only have so much time with our kids, so when you set your resolutions or goals, consider what you want in relation to your kids. iMOM has three great articles that lay out goals for moms of toddlers, elementary kids, and tweens and teens. They help moms focus on the stage they’re in and what’s most important developmentally and relationally. The episode wraps up with a chat about different kinds of resolutions, like micro and mini resolutions and drop lists. One of those might be the one that finally leads you to success!
